Nabq Protected Area
History, wildlife, and underwater exploration!
Covering 600 km2, Nabq Protected Area is the largest coastal protected area of the Gulf of Aqaba, and it’s just 15 minutes away from Sharm El Sheikh’s airport!
Dive and snorkel your way through Nabq’s Red Sea waters and bask in the beauty of the protectorate’s coral reefs and diverse marine life, which includes Dugongs, Hawksbill Turtles, Giant Moray Eels, and Clownfish (i.e. “the Nemo fish”!).
Announced as a protected area in 1992, this area’s desert topography features dense mangrove forests, as well as a diverse range of rare birds and other animals that you can discover through a fun and exciting safari trip. As with most Egyptian desert locations, Nabq hosts many camels, which have long been desert companions for the locals of the area.
Nabq Protected Area features the world’s most northerly mangrove stands; keep an eye out for them while kayaking!
Nabq Protected Area is also awash with plenty of palm trees, which yield delicious, nutrient-packed dates. See if you can spot a few Toothbrush Bushes (Arak), too! Egyptians have used the branches of this unique plant as a natural toothbrush for centuries.
For history buffs, the 1956 Maria Schröder cargo shipwreck is an intriguing excursion in which you can have a nice local Bedouin tea with the stunning view of the shipwreck.
